Thailand’s Ministry of Transport Proposes 30 Billion Baht EV Transition Plan
The Ministry of Transport has proposed two new projects utilizing a 30 billion baht loan decree to subsidize public transport electrification and fuel costs.
According to a report by Thai Post on August 31, 2026, the Thai Ministry of Transport is seeking to utilize a 30 billion baht loan decree to fund two major energy transition initiatives. Siriphong Angkasakulkiat, representing the Ministry, announced that the proposal aims to modernize the public transport sector while providing economic relief to the logistics industry.
The primary component of the proposal involves allocating 24 billion baht toward the conversion of public vehicles from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, 6 billion baht is earmarked to assist the transport sector with rising fuel costs. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is reportedly prepared to support the implementation of these measures.
For residents and travelers, this initiative signals a potential shift toward a greener public transportation network in the future. If approved, the transition could lead to a gradual increase in electric buses and public vehicles on Thai roads, potentially reducing emissions and modernizing transit infrastructure. However, the proposal is currently in the planning stage. It remains to be confirmed when these funds will be officially approved, how the transition timeline will be structured, and which specific public transport routes or vehicle types will be prioritized for the initial conversion phase.
