Nakhon Ratchasima Officials Monitor Water Levels Amid El Niño Concerns
Local authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima are monitoring water levels in major dams as the province faces potential drought risks linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
On August 31, 2026, Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Anuphong Suksomnit chaired a provincial meeting to address regional water management. During the session, Sukon Temyotying, Director of the Nakhon Ratchasima Irrigation Project, reported on the current status of the province's four major dams.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Lam Takhong Dam in Sikhio District currently holds 105 million cubic meters of usable water, representing 33% of its 314-million-cubic-meter capacity. Meanwhile, the Lam Phra Phloeng Dam in Pak Thong Chai District holds 44 million cubic meters, or 28% of its 155-million-cubic-meter capacity.
Officials have issued a warning regarding the potential impact of the El Niño phenomenon. There is concern that if cumulative rainfall remains below expected thresholds, the region could face significant drought conditions. This situation is particularly notable as other parts of Thailand are currently experiencing flooding.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights a potential risk to local agricultural stability and water security in the coming months. While the current water levels are being managed, the long-term impact depends heavily on future precipitation patterns. Authorities have not yet announced specific water rationing measures, but they are maintaining a state of vigilance.
