Thai Youth Jazz Orchestra Promotes Thai Textiles as Soft Power
The Office of Contemporary Art and Culture is blending Thai textiles with jazz music to modernize the perception of traditional fabrics among younger generations.
According to Khaosod Online, the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC) under the Ministry of Culture has launched a project to integrate contemporary Thai textile designs into the Thai Youth Jazz Orchestra. This initiative aims to promote Thai 'Soft Power' by moving away from traditional perceptions of Thai fabrics, which some younger people may find inaccessible or outdated.
Kaesorn Kamnerdpetch, Director of the OCAC, stated that the goal is to reinterpret Thai textiles so they feel natural within modern lifestyles and creative expressions. To achieve this, the orchestra will perform in outfits designed by renowned fashion designer Ek Thongprasert. This project builds upon the success of a 2025 initiative that provided Thai textile costumes for the band Asia7, which received positive feedback and led to international performance opportunities.
For residents and travelers, this project highlights a growing trend in Thailand to revitalize traditional crafts through modern artistic mediums like jazz and high fashion. It suggests that visitors may see more innovative uses of local textiles in urban cultural spaces.
