Thai Women’s Volleyball Coach Shin Yoshida Addresses Online Criticism
Following Thailand's historic Asian Championship victory and Olympic qualification, staff coach Shin Yoshida has responded to criticism from Japanese fans regarding his transition from the Japanese national team.
The Thailand women’s national volleyball team recently achieved a historic milestone by winning the 2026 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship. This victory secured the team’s first-ever qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games, following notable wins against Japan in the semi-finals and China in the final.
However, the success has been accompanied by controversy directed at Shin Yoshida, a staff coach for the Thai team. According to Khaosod Online, Yoshida has faced significant criticism and negative messages on social media from Japanese fans who alleged that he voluntarily left his previous role with the Japanese national team to join Thailand.
In a personal statement, Yoshida clarified that his departure from the Japanese team in 2025 was not a personal choice. He explained that he served as an analyst and interpreter under a fixed-term contract, which was not renewed by the organization upon its expiration. Yoshida stated that he felt compelled to address these misconceptions due to the increasing volume of inaccurate claims and personal attacks he has received.
For residents and visitors in Thailand, this situation highlights the intense public interest surrounding the national team's recent sporting success. While the team’s Olympic path is now confirmed, the personal experiences of the coaching staff remain a topic of public discussion. It remains to be seen how these social media tensions will evolve as the team prepares for future international competitions.
