Hat Yai Prepares Flood Mitigation Measures for 2026
Hat Yai Mayor Narongporn Na Phatthalung has announced proactive flood prevention efforts, including canal dredging and equipment deployment, as the city prepares for the 2026 rainy season.
On August 31, 2026, Hat Yai Mayor Narongporn Na Phatthalung inspected the Khuan Lang floodgate at the Phuminat Damri Canal (Khlong R.1) in Songkhla Province to oversee flood preparedness. According to Khaosod Online, the city is coordinating with provincial authorities, local government units, and academic experts to establish a comprehensive warning and response center.
To mitigate potential flooding across the city’s 21-square-kilometer area, municipal teams are currently dredging canals and removing debris to ensure efficient water flow. The city has deployed 18 water pumps, though the Mayor expressed a desire to increase this capacity to over 20 units to better protect the urban center.
For residents and travelers, these measures are intended to minimize the impact of seasonal heavy rains. While the city is actively preparing, the Mayor acknowledged that the unpredictability of natural disasters requires ongoing vigilance. The administration is also seeking additional government funding to bolster these defenses. As of now, the effectiveness of these measures remains subject to the severity of the upcoming weather conditions, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
