OIC Sets New Licensing Rules for Insurance Influencers in Thailand
Thailand's Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) has introduced new regulations requiring influencers to hold a license if they recommend specific insurance products for compensation.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) has established clear guidelines for social media influencers and content creators regarding insurance-related content. OIC Secretary-General Chuchat Pramoonpol stated that while influencers are permitted to share general knowledge or personal experiences regarding insurance, those who specifically target individuals to recommend or sell insurance products in exchange for compensation must now possess a formal insurance license.
This regulatory update is significant for residents and expatriates in Thailand who rely on social media for financial advice. If you are considering purchasing an insurance policy based on a recommendation from an online creator, it is now essential to verify whether that individual is a licensed professional. This measure aims to protect consumers from potentially misleading financial advice and ensure that those profiting from insurance sales are held to professional standards.
At this stage, the OIC has outlined the requirement for a license when receiving compensation for specific recommendations. However, details regarding the enforcement timeline for existing content and the specific penalties for non-compliance remain to be confirmed. Residents should exercise caution and verify the credentials of any individual providing financial guidance before making insurance commitments.
