OSMEP Launches Green Business Initiative to Boost Thai SMEs

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) has initiated a program to assist Thai SMEs in adopting environmentally friendly business models. Panita Shinawatra, acting director of OSMEP, stated that the 'Green Business Promotion and Potential Development Project for Fiscal Year 2026' aims to help local businesses navigate increasingly stringent global trade regulations and environmental requirements.

So far, 246 entrepreneurs have participated in training sessions covering topics such as Carbon Footprint and Net Zero pathways. OSMEP projects that this initiative will generate at least 69 million baht in economic value. The agency emphasizes that transitioning to green operations is no longer optional but a necessity for competitiveness, noting that 'Green equals Lean'—a strategy intended to reduce production costs and improve efficiency while meeting international standards.

For residents and expatriates, this shift suggests a growing emphasis on sustainability within the Thai business sector, which may lead to more eco-conscious products and services in the local market. While the program has successfully trained the initial cohort, it remains to be confirmed how many additional SMEs will be included in future phases of the project and what specific long-term impacts these changes will have on consumer pricing and product availability across Thailand.
