Thai Health Experts Combat Stealth E-Cigarette Marketing
Public health advocates are partnering with influencers to counter deceptive e-cigarette marketing strategies targeting digital platforms.
At the 24th National Health Assembly, the Tobacco Control Research and Knowledge Management Center (TRC) highlighted a shift in how e-cigarettes are promoted in Thailand. Assistant Professor Dr. Srirach Lapyai from Mahidol University’s Faculty of Public Health warned that e-cigarette marketing has evolved beyond direct product sales. Instead, these products are now being integrated into digital content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
According to experts, these campaigns often frame vaping as a symbol of modernity, personal freedom, and lifestyle, rather than highlighting the addictive nature of nicotine. By utilizing influencers, these marketing tactics often reach audiences without them realizing they are viewing promotional content.
For residents and travelers, this development underscores the prevalence of e-cigarette promotion in the digital space. While the government and health networks are working to establish stricter standards and regulations to control this hidden advertising, the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen. It is important for the public to be aware that content featuring vaping may be part of a strategic marketing effort. As of now, the focus remains on raising awareness and developing policy frameworks to mitigate the risks associated with digital nicotine exposure. Further updates on specific regulatory changes are expected as the network continues its advocacy efforts.
