China Expands Marriage Registration Sites to Hospitals and Banks

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, Chinese authorities have introduced new, unconventional locations for marriage registration in an effort to boost marriage rates, which fell by 7.5% in the first half of the year. Following a regulatory change in May of last year that removed the requirement for couples to register in their home province, registration services have expanded to parks, subway stations, airports, and nightclubs.

In August, a branch of the Postal Savings Bank of China in Tianjin became the first bank to offer marriage registration services. Shortly after, on August 20—coinciding with the Qixi Festival, or 'Chinese Valentine’s Day'—the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Zibo, Shandong province, began offering similar services. The hospital promotes this as a 'one-stop' experience, allowing couples to register their marriage, undergo pre-marital health screenings, and receive family planning advice in a single visit.

For residents and travelers, this shift highlights the government's aggressive push to encourage family formation. While these services offer convenience, it remains to be confirmed how these decentralized registration processes will be integrated into the national civil registry system long-term. Travelers should note that these services are intended for legal residents, and the policy does not alter existing visa or residency requirements for foreigners.
