Medical Warning for Women with PCOS During Hot Weather

Doctors advise women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to monitor lifestyle habits during extreme heat to avoid worsening menstrual irregularities.

According to a report by Khaosod Online, medical experts are urging women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to be particularly mindful of their daily habits during periods of intense heat. PCOS, a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, is often associated with ovulation issues and hormonal imbalances, which can manifest as irregular periods, acne, weight gain, or increased body hair.

Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner Kang Hanjing notes that summer conditions—characterized by high heat and humidity—can exacerbate these symptoms if lifestyle choices are poor. Specifically, consuming excessive cold drinks, eating high-sugar foods, staying up late, and reducing physical activity can place additional strain on the body’s ability to maintain equilibrium. Furthermore, frequently moving between air-conditioned environments and extreme outdoor heat may disrupt the body's natural regulation.

For residents and travelers, the warning highlights that sudden changes in menstrual cycles during hot weather should not be dismissed as mere stress or heat exhaustion. While these lifestyle factors are identified as potential triggers for worsening symptoms, the report emphasizes that PCOS is a complex condition. Individuals experiencing sudden or concerning changes in their health should consult a medical professional rather than assuming the cause is solely environmental. It remains to be confirmed how specific local environmental factors in Thailand may interact with individual health profiles beyond these general observations.
