Police Apprehend Driver Smuggling Foreign National in Chiang Rai
Authorities in Chiang Saen arrested a man for allegedly smuggling a Chinese national after a high-speed pursuit involving a wrong-way escape attempt.
On August 29, 2026, police in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, conducted a traffic stop on Road 1129 near the Ban Pa Sak Hang Wiang area. According to a report by Khaosod Online, officers attempted to inspect a white Isuzu pickup truck, but the driver performed an abrupt U-turn and drove against traffic to evade the checkpoint.
During the ensuing pursuit, the driver dropped off a passenger near Highway 1290 before continuing his escape. Officers successfully apprehended the passenger, identified as a 25-year-old Chinese national named Mr. Zhang, and later captured the driver, identified as 53-year-old Mr. Phutthachat, also known as 'Ja Dao,' a resident of Buriram.
Authorities noted that Mr. Phutthachat was reportedly out on bail for a similar human smuggling offense involving four Chinese nationals just days prior to this incident.
For residents and travelers in the region, this event highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to curb illegal border crossings and human smuggling activities in northern Thailand.
