Bangkok authorities are managing a fire at the Khlong Thom Center, where PM2.5 levels have spiked to 630 µg/m³, prompting health warnings.
On August 29, 2026, a fire broke out at the Khlong Thom Center in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site to oversee firefighting efforts. While the blaze is largely under control, officials are currently using heavy machinery to access smoldering hotspots within the building, which has suffered significant structural damage.
For residents and travelers in the area, the primary concern is air quality. Monitoring at the scene recorded PM2.5 levels reaching 630 micrograms per cubic meter, a level significantly higher than standard safety thresholds. Governor Chadchart has advised the public to avoid the immediate vicinity. Those who must be in areas affected by smoke are strongly encouraged to wear N95 masks to protect against fine particulate matter.
Regarding chemical hazards, initial assessments have been more reassuring. Officials reported that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured at approximately 0.4 ppm, which is currently within normal ranges. No other toxic gases have been detected at concerning levels at this time. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. It remains to be confirmed how long the cleanup and structural assessment will take, and whether the air quality in the surrounding neighborhoods will stabilize as the remaining hotspots are fully extinguished.
