New Thai Research Innovation Addresses Arsenic Contamination in Kok River

On August 29, 2026, Professor Dr. Yotschanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), visited Chiang Rai to address the long-standing issue of arsenic contamination in the Kok River. Accompanied by local Pheu Thai MP Thanarat Jongsutthanmanee, the Minister introduced a new filtration system developed through the integration of synchrotron light and nanotechnology, branded as 'AquaNano.'

According to the report from Khaosod Online, this technology is capable of removing 100% of arsenic toxins from raw river water, rendering it safe for consumption and daily use. The initiative aims to provide an affordable, scalable solution that can be implemented by local water utilities across Thailand. Dr. Yotschanan emphasized that while this technology provides immediate relief for residents, the long-term solution requires addressing the root causes of the pollution at its source.

For residents and travelers in the Chiang Rai area, this development represents a significant step toward improving local water security. However, the timeline for the widespread deployment of these filtration units across all affected communities remains to be confirmed.
