Emergency Disaster Zone Declared Following Khlong Thom Center Fire
Authorities have established a disaster relief zone and registration center following a major fire at the Khlong Thom Center in Bangkok.
On August 29, 2026, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) officially declared the Khlong Thom Center area in Bangkok’s Pom Prap Sattru Phai district an emergency disaster zone. This follows a significant fire that broke out on August 28, 2026, affecting approximately 4 rai (about 1.6 acres) of the commercial area. According to Khaosod Online, 11 people sustained injuries, though no fatalities have been reported.
Deputy Minister of Interior Jasetsart Thaiseth visited the site to oversee relief efforts. A dedicated registration center has been established to assist affected individuals, including vendors and residents, in filing claims for financial compensation. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is coordinating initial support, covering costs such as medical treatment, temporary housing, and equipment for livelihoods. The DDPM is also processing claims for residential repair costs based on actual damages.
For travelers and residents, the area remains under official assessment. While the immediate fire is extinguished, the site is currently restricted to facilitate damage evaluation and safety inspections. Those who were in the vicinity during the incident or who have property affected are encouraged to register at the designated center. It remains to be confirmed how long the site will remain closed and the full extent of the long-term impact on local business operations.
