Cambodia Claims Success in Eliminating Cyber Scam Centers
Cambodian officials report the eradication of cybercrime hubs, though international experts remain skeptical of the declaration.
On August 29, 2026, Cambodia’s Senior Minister and head of the Committee for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), Chai Sinarith, announced that the country has successfully dismantled its online scam centers. During a meeting with approximately 50 foreign diplomats and international organizations, Sinarith stated that there are no longer any locations operating as cybercrime hubs within the nation.
According to the report, between July 2025 and August 20, 2026, authorities inspected 793 suspected sites and raided 624 of them. These operations reportedly led to the arrest of nearly 30,000 suspects of 39 nationalities, the deportation of 58,266 foreign nationals, and the detention of 3,477 individuals facing criminal charges.
For travelers and residents in the region, this announcement highlights ongoing efforts to address human trafficking and cyber fraud, which have long been associated with illicit compounds in Southeast Asia. However, the claim has been met with significant skepticism. Mark Taylor, an independent international anti-human trafficking consultant, warned that believing these scams have been entirely eliminated is a "grave misunderstanding." Taylor noted that credible indicators suggest large-scale fraudulent operations persist and that the recruitment of foreign labor for these illicit activities continues. As such, the actual status of these criminal networks remains a subject of international debate and verification.
