Fire Breaks Out at Khlong Thom Center in Bangkok
A major fire at the Khlong Thom Center has resulted in 10 injuries, including a critically ill firefighter, with authorities currently investigating the cause and safety system failures.
On the night of August 28, 2026, a significant fire erupted at the Khlong Thom Center, a well-known commercial hub for electrical equipment and general goods in Bangkok. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who visited the site on the morning of August 29, confirmed that the blaze has been brought under control, though two areas of smoldering fire remain.
The incident has left 10 people injured. Among the casualties is a volunteer firefighter in critical condition who required a ventilator due to smoke inhalation. The facility, a 20-year-old steel structure spanning approximately four rai, houses numerous small retail shops on the ground level and parking facilities above.
For residents and visitors, the area remains restricted as authorities assess the structural integrity of the building and monitor air quality. The Governor has ordered an investigation into why the building's sprinkler system failed to activate during the emergency. Preliminary suspicions suggest the fire may have originated from batteries, though official confirmation from forensic experts is pending. A center has been established to assist over 300 affected vendors with damage reports and compensation. Travelers are advised to avoid the vicinity of Khlong Thom while cleanup and safety inspections continue.
