Ebola Outbreak Expands in DR Congo as Cases Surpass 5,700
The Ebola virus has spread to two additional health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with total confirmed infections reaching 5,794 and fatalities climbing to 2,786.
According to a report by Khaosod Online citing AP, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has expanded into two new health zones: Biena and Manguredjipa in North Kivu province. This brings the total number of affected health zones to 60.
Health officials report that the virus is spreading at an unprecedented rate. The current data indicates at least 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths. While the majority of cases remain in Ituri province, North Kivu is experiencing a particularly high mortality rate of nearly 69%, significantly higher than the national average of 48%. Experts attribute the worsening situation in part to delayed response efforts.
In response, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has established a new treatment center in the Biena zone to improve rapid response, enhance contact tracing, and support local public health authorities in containment efforts.
