Medical PhD Student Loses 11 Million Baht in Sophisticated Call Center Scam
A doctoral medical student in Thailand was defrauded of nearly 11 million baht over three days after being targeted by a criminal syndicate posing as mobile service providers and police.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 28, 2026, a PhD medical student sought assistance from the Saimai Tong Rod organization after losing approximately 11 million baht to a call center scam. The victim reported that the ordeal began on August 22, when they received a call from an individual claiming to be a mobile network representative. The caller alleged that the student’s identity had been used to register a phone number in Loei province for fraudulent activities.
The scam escalated when the call was transferred to an individual posing as a police officer. Through a Line video call, the perpetrators used intimidation, threatening the student’s academic career and the safety of their parents to ensure compliance. The victim was instructed to deceive their family by claiming the funds were needed for studies in Switzerland. Between August 23 and the following days, the student transferred 4.5 million baht across 11 transactions to six different accounts. Subsequently, the scammers demanded more, sending individuals to collect cash directly from the student’s residence.
This incident highlights the sophisticated methods used by criminal syndicates to exploit residents through fear and social engineering.
