Krabi Social Development Office Addresses Seizure of Guarantor's Vehicle
The Krabi Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office has clarified the legal seizure of a village headman's truck following a defaulted loan for a person with a disability.
On August 28, 2026, the Krabi Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office (MSDHS) issued a statement regarding a viral social media report from Ao Luk District. The report alleged that a local village headman had his pickup truck seized by authorities after acting as a guarantor for a 40,000-baht loan provided to a resident with a disability.
According to Khaosod Online, the MSDHS clarified that the loan was issued in 2020 with a repayment plan of 800 baht per month and zero interest. However, the borrower reportedly failed to make any payments. Consequently, the guarantor became legally liable for the outstanding debt, leading to the enforcement of a court order to seize the vehicle. The village headman had expressed significant distress, comparing the state agency's collection methods to predatory lending practices.
For residents and expatriates, this case highlights the strict legal implications of acting as a loan guarantor in Thailand. Even when dealing with government-backed social welfare loans, failing to ensure the borrower meets their obligations can lead to personal asset seizure. It remains to be confirmed whether the village headman will pursue further legal appeals or if the borrower will face additional consequences for the default.
