Chinese Cinema Launches 'Nap Service' for Office Workers
A cinema in Xi'an, China, is repurposing empty daytime screening rooms into nap zones for workers, offering monthly memberships for under 200 baht.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Lumiere Cinema in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, has introduced a unique service to utilize its facilities during quiet weekday hours. Since April 2025, the theater has converted two screening rooms, totaling 76 seats, into designated nap areas for local office workers and professionals.
Available from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM on workdays, the service provides reclining seats that lay flat, blankets, and complimentary coffee. The membership model is priced at 39.9 yuan (approximately 195 baht) for individuals and 59.9 yuan (approximately 293 baht) for two people per month. The cinema manager, identified as Mr. Xu, explained that the initiative was launched to maximize space usage during periods when movie attendance is typically low.
For travelers or residents in China, this trend highlights an innovative approach to urban space management, turning underutilized commercial venues into functional rest areas. While the service offers a practical solution for those needing a midday recharge, it remains to be seen if this business model will be adopted by other cinema chains or if it will face regulatory scrutiny regarding safety and fire codes in public entertainment venues. As of now, the service is specific to this location in Xi'an.
