Thailand Opens M82 Elevated Expressway Section for Free Trial
The Department of Highways has officially launched a trial run of the M82 elevated motorway extension between Ekachai and Ban Phaeo, offering 24-hour free access.
On August 28, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn presided over the official opening of the trial service for the M82 motorway, specifically the section connecting Ekachai to Ban Phaeo. According to Khaosod Online, this project aims to alleviate long-standing traffic congestion in the area, often referred to locally as the 'seven-generation road,' and improve logistics efficiency for the western region of Bangkok.
The new elevated structure is designed to enhance connectivity between Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, and the southern provinces. During this trial phase, motorists can utilize the route free of charge 24 hours a day. The Department of Highways expects this infrastructure development to significantly streamline travel times for commuters and freight transport alike.
For residents and travelers, this opening offers a faster alternative to surface-level roads, which have historically suffered from heavy traffic. While the trial is currently active, details regarding the eventual transition to a toll-based system or specific long-term operational hours have not been finalized.
