Thailand Accelerates Rice Export Negotiations with China
The Ministry of Commerce is working to finalize a 60,000-ton rice sale to China, aiming to reach a total government-to-government export volume of 500,000 tons.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade is actively negotiating the sale of an additional 60,000 tons of rice to China’s COFCO Corporation. This effort follows the successful delivery and payment of 40,000 tons earlier this March, which was part of an existing 280,000-ton contract.
Arada Fuangthong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, stated that the Thai Cabinet has approved an expansion of the government-to-government (G to G) agreement by 220,000 tons. This adjustment is intended to accommodate a total target of 500,000 tons requested by the Chinese government. Officials are currently working to finalize competitive pricing for the new 60,000-ton batch, noting that the timing is strategic as China seeks new seasonal stock while Thailand’s main-crop rice is expected to enter the market toward the end of the year.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights the ongoing strength of Thailand’s agricultural export sector, which remains a cornerstone of the national economy. While the government is pushing for a swift agreement, the final price and the specific timeline for the delivery of the remaining 460,000 tons under the expanded agreement remain to be confirmed. These trade activities generally reflect broader economic stability, though they do not directly impact daily tourism or local retail rice prices.
