M82 Elevated Motorway Opens: Free Travel Between Bang Khun Thian and Ban Phaeo
Thailand has officially opened the M82 elevated motorway, offering two years of toll-free travel to improve connectivity between Bangkok and the southern provinces.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has officially inaugurated the M82 elevated motorway. This new infrastructure project spans 25 kilometers, connecting the Southern Outer Ring Road at the Bang Khun Thian interchange to Ban Phaeo.
To encourage usage and alleviate traffic congestion on the heavily traveled Rama II Road—historically known for long-term construction delays—the government has announced that the motorway will be free of charge for the first two years of operation. The route is now open 24 hours a day, featuring four entry and exit points designed to streamline travel from Bangkok toward the southern region of Thailand.
For residents and travelers, this development represents a significant alternative to the traditional Rama II route, potentially reducing travel times and improving road safety. While the motorway is currently operational, travelers should note that the toll-free status is limited to a two-year trial period. Future toll structures and long-term maintenance schedules beyond this initial phase remain to be confirmed by the relevant transport authorities.
