Proposed Overhaul of Thailand’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act
Sathit Pitutecha has proposed a significant restructuring of Thailand's disaster management framework, suggesting the command center be moved from the Ministry of Interior to the Office of the Prime Minister.
According to a report by Matichon Online on August 27, 2026, Sathit Pitutecha has called for a comprehensive overhaul of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act. Sathit argues that the current centralized model, which places disaster management under the Ministry of Interior, is no longer effective for addressing modern challenges.
His proposal suggests elevating the national disaster command center to be under the direct authority of the Office of the Prime Minister. The objective is to improve coordination and efficiency during emergency situations by removing bureaucratic layers associated with the current ministerial structure.
For residents and travelers in Thailand, this proposal is significant as it concerns the country's readiness to handle natural disasters, such as floods or storms. A more agile command structure could theoretically lead to faster response times and better resource allocation during crises. However, it is important to note that this is currently a policy proposal.
