EEC Accelerates Infrastructure Upgrades to Attract Data Center Investment
The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is fast-tracking water and electricity infrastructure to support a projected 10 billion baht influx in data center investments.
According to Khaosod Online, the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) has signed a memorandum of understanding with six agencies to enhance sustainable infrastructure in the region. EECO Secretary-General Chula Sukmanop stated that while investment interest in data centers has surged in 2026, actual capital deployment depends on the reliability of essential utilities.
To address these needs, the EECO is focusing on two critical areas. First, they are developing water recycling projects that treat community wastewater for use in data center cooling systems. Second, to resolve potential electricity shortages, authorities are considering allowing private entities to sell power directly to data center operators through Direct Power Purchase Agreements (Direct PPA).
For residents and travelers, these developments signal a push toward high-tech industrial growth in the eastern provinces. While this infrastructure expansion aims to stabilize the local economy and support digital growth, the long-term impact on local utility costs and the specific timeline for the implementation of the Direct PPA policy remain to be confirmed. The EECO plans to showcase these initiatives at the upcoming EEC Expo 2026.
