Udon Thani Airport to Receive Public Aerodrome Certification and Launch Kunming Flights
Udon Thani Airport is set to receive its public aerodrome operating certificate on September 2, 2026, followed by the launch of direct flights to Kunming on September 8.
According to a report from Khaosod Online Thailand, the Ministry of Transport is advancing its 'Airport for Regional Development' policy to elevate regional airports to international safety and service standards. As part of this initiative, Udon Thani Airport is scheduled to receive its Public Aerodrome Operating Certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) on September 2, 2026. This milestone makes it the sixth airport under the Department of Airports to achieve this certification, following Betong, Buriram, Surat Thani, Phitsanulok, and Krabi.
For travelers and residents, this certification signifies that the airport meets rigorous international safety and operational requirements. Furthermore, the airport is expanding its international connectivity. Lucky Air is set to commence direct flights between Kunming and Udon Thani starting September 8, 2026. This new route is expected to support tourism, trade, and investment growth in the northeastern region of Thailand.
While the certification date and the start of the new flight route have been announced by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Patarapong Pataraprasit, travelers should monitor official airline announcements for specific flight schedules and potential changes.
