Taiwanese Husband Jailed After Using Robot Vacuum to Expose Wife's Infidelity

According to a report by Khaosod Online, a Taiwanese man has been sentenced to five months in prison following a legal dispute involving his wife’s infidelity. The man, who married in 2021, became suspicious of his wife’s activities after discovering an unfamiliar toothbrush at their home in September 2023. After reviewing security footage of a man dropping his wife off, he used the camera on his robot vacuum cleaner to monitor his home remotely.

Upon witnessing his wife with another man, he recorded the footage and used it as evidence in a civil lawsuit. He was initially successful, with a court ordering his wife and her partner to pay him 500,000 New Taiwan Dollars for violating his marital rights. However, the situation reversed when his wife filed a counter-lawsuit against him for violating her privacy. The court ultimately ruled that the unauthorized recording constituted a breach of privacy, resulting in a five-month prison sentence for the husband.

For residents and travelers, this case highlights the strict legal boundaries regarding surveillance and privacy in Taiwan. While the use of smart home devices is common, recording individuals without their consent—even within one's own home—can lead to criminal charges.
