Stock Exchange of Thailand Collaborates with China on New Regional Index
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) is developing a new investment index featuring a 60:40 split between Chinese and ASEAN equities to attract capital flow.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) has announced discussions with Chinese financial counterparts to create a new investment index. According to Prachachat Business, the proposed index structure allocates 60% to Chinese, Hong Kong, and A-Share stocks, while the remaining 40% will consist of ASEAN equities.
SET President Asadej Kongsiri stated that this initiative aims to facilitate the issuance of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and encourage greater capital flow into Thailand and the broader ASEAN region. The move is part of a wider strategy to strengthen regional capital market integration, with efforts accelerating ahead of Thailand hosting the IMF-World Bank meetings this October.
For residents and expatriates, this development signals a strategic shift in Thailand’s financial landscape, potentially increasing the visibility of regional investment products. While the initiative aims to boost market liquidity and regional economic ties, it remains to be seen how the final index will be structured and when the associated financial products will be officially launched for public trading. Investors and observers should monitor further announcements from the SET regarding the timeline for implementation and the specific regulatory frameworks that will govern these new investment vehicles.
