Bank of Thailand Extends MPC Terms and Appoints New Member

The Bank of Thailand has renewed the terms for three Monetary Policy Committee members and appointed former Deputy Governor Mathee Supapongse, effective November 1, 2026.

MPC Leadership Update

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) board has officially approved the extension of terms for three existing members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC): Chao Kengchon, Somchai Jitsuchon, and Saovanee Chantapong. In addition to these renewals, the board has appointed Mathee Supapongse, a former Deputy Governor of the BOT, as a new member of the committee.

Effective Date

These appointments and term extensions are scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026. The announcement was confirmed by Jiranuwat Thanyacharoen, Secretary of the Bank of Thailand Board.

Impact and Outlook

For residents and expatriates in Thailand, the MPC plays a critical role in determining the nation’s benchmark interest rates, which influence inflation, borrowing costs, and the overall economic climate. The continuity provided by the reappointed members, combined with the addition of a former Deputy Governor, suggests a focus on maintaining stability within the central bank's policy-making body.

While these appointments provide clarity on the committee's composition for the coming term, the specific policy direction the new-look committee will take remains to be seen. Observers will be watching for upcoming MPC meetings to see how this leadership structure influences future monetary decisions in response to Thailand's evolving economic landscape.
