Medical Experts Warn of Vision Risks Associated with Thyroid Eye Disease

Thai medical specialists are raising awareness about Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), urging patients to monitor eye health to prevent potential vision loss.

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, medical experts are emphasizing the importance of recognizing Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) as a serious condition that extends beyond the common perception of 'bulging eyes.' While many associate thyroid disorders primarily with metabolism, heart rate, or weight fluctuations, specialists warn that TED can cause significant ocular issues, including dry eyes, eyelid retraction, double vision, and in severe cases, permanent vision loss.

Prof. Dr. Panet Pangputhipong, President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand, highlighted that TED significantly impacts daily life, work performance, and personal confidence. A major concern for healthcare providers is that many patients—and even some medical staff—remain unaware of the link between thyroid conditions and these ocular symptoms. This lack of awareness often leads to delayed diagnosis and referrals, which can exacerbate complications.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this serves as a reminder to be vigilant regarding persistent eye discomfort if diagnosed with a thyroid condition. Experts stress that early assessment is the most effective way to mitigate long-term damage. While the medical community is actively working to increase awareness, it remains to be seen how these educational efforts will influence clinical referral timelines and patient outcomes across the country.
