Authorities Intercept Illegal E-Waste at Laem Chabang Port
Thai officials discovered electronic waste hidden within shipping containers declared as metal scrap following an international tip-off.
On August 26, 2026, Thai authorities conducted an inspection at Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province, resulting in the discovery of illegal electronic waste. According to Khaosod Online, the operation was led by the Pollution Control Department (PCD) in collaboration with the Laem Chabang Customs Office and the Department of Industrial Works.
The inspection targeted 10 shipping containers after the Basel Action Network (BAN) provided a tip-off. While the cargo was officially declared as metal and aluminum scrap weighing over 202.89 tons, officials found that six of the containers contained unauthorized circuit boards. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin has since ordered the PCD to intensify surveillance and interception efforts regarding the illegal import of hazardous waste, citing the Basel Convention framework to protect public health and the environment.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights ongoing efforts by the Thai government to regulate waste management and prevent environmental contamination. While the immediate threat of these specific containers has been addressed, the broader implications for local air and soil quality remain a concern if illegal dumping continues.
