Teacher Faces Financial Ruin and Health Crisis After Loan Guarantee
A Buriram-based teacher is struggling with a 16-million-baht debt and severe health issues after four colleagues defaulted on loans she guaranteed.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 27, 2026, a 47-year-old teacher in Buriram province, identified as Mrs. Phimlaphat, is facing a severe personal crisis. In 2010, while working at a private school, she acted as a loan guarantor for four colleagues in a reciprocal arrangement. These individuals subsequently defaulted on their payments and opted for bankruptcy to avoid repayment, leaving Mrs. Phimlaphat as the sole liable party for a total debt exceeding 16 million baht.
As a result of this financial burden, Mrs. Phimlaphat has faced significant personal hardship, including the disconnection of her electricity and the threat of being dismissed from her government teaching position due to bankruptcy proceedings. The extreme stress has led to a serious health decline; she was hospitalized for over a month after suffering a stroke (cerebral infarction) and requires ongoing medical treatment.
For residents and expatriates, this case highlights the significant risks associated with acting as a financial guarantor in Thailand, where legal obligations can persist even if the primary borrowers declare bankruptcy. While the teacher has reportedly filed complaints with relevant authorities, the final outcome of her legal battle and her future employment status remain to be confirmed.
