University Student Scammed Out of 2 Million Baht in Call Center Fraud
An 18-year-old university student in Pathum Thani lost 2 million baht after being targeted by a sophisticated call center scam involving impersonation and false legal threats.
On August 26, 2026, authorities at Khlong Luang Police Station in Pathum Thani province reported a significant fraud case involving an 18-year-old first-year student at a private university. According to Khaosod Online, the victim was defrauded of 2 million baht by a criminal group posing as officials.
The incident began on August 17, when the student received a call from individuals claiming to be mobile network employees. The callers alleged that the student’s identification number had been used to register phone lines linked to illegal gambling websites. The scammers escalated the situation by impersonating police officers, using audio effects to simulate official radio communications, and threatening the student with legal consequences. Under duress, the student was instructed to contact his parents, claiming he needed funds for an overseas scholarship, and subsequently transferred 2 million baht to the scammers to 'clear' the fabricated case.
For residents and visitors, this case highlights the prevalence of sophisticated 'call center' scams in Thailand that utilize psychological pressure and impersonation. It is important to note that legitimate Thai law enforcement agencies do not demand money transfers to resolve legal investigations over the phone. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
