GPSC Advocates for Small Modular Reactors to Power Thailand’s Industrial Future

At the 'New Energy for Thailand' seminar, Sirimet Leepakorn, President and Acting COO of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited (GPSC), identified Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a critical pathway for achieving Thailand’s Net Zero 2050 goals. Representing the PTT Group, GPSC is currently studying the feasibility of installing SMRs on ships to accelerate the adoption of small-scale nuclear technology.

This initiative aims to support energy-intensive hubs like Map Ta Phut, a major global petrochemical center. Sirimet noted that while past energy strategies focused primarily on grid reliability and cost through fossil fuels, the current transition requires a shift toward sustainable alternatives. GPSC is proposing a four-pronged approach to energy transition, urging the government to implement proactive regulations to facilitate this shift.

For residents and travelers, this development signals a potential long-term change in Thailand’s energy landscape, aiming to balance industrial growth with environmental sustainability. However, the proposal remains in the study and advocacy phase. It is not yet confirmed whether the government will adopt the requested regulatory framework or if SMR technology will be integrated into the national power grid.
