Thailand Announces Energy Strategy Shift Amid Middle East Instability
Energy Minister Ekniti Promphan outlines a new plan to reduce reliance on Middle Eastern oil imports following record-high fuel price volatility.
Thailand’s Minister of Energy, Ekniti Promphan, recently announced a strategic pivot in the nation’s energy policy during a speech titled 'New Energy for Thailand.' Citing the ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East, the Minister highlighted the vulnerability of Thailand’s energy supply chain, noting that the country currently imports 90% of its crude oil.
According to Khaosod Online, the Minister pointed to the extreme volatility in global fuel prices, specifically referencing a surge in Singapore diesel benchmark prices that reached 292 USD, which would have pushed domestic pump prices above 70 THB per liter without intervention from the Oil Fuel Fund. To mitigate these risks, the Ministry is proposing a revision of the Power Development Plan (PDP) to increase clean energy usage to between 60% and 90%, alongside plans to unlock Direct Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for all industries and a solar energy initiative for one million households.
For residents and travelers, this shift suggests a long-term move toward energy independence, which may eventually stabilize fuel costs. However, the practical implementation of these measures, including the timeline for the new PDP and the specific rollout of the solar initiative, remains to be confirmed. The government’s focus is currently on transitioning away from daily reactive measures toward a more secure, sustainable energy framework.
