Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Upper Thailand (Aug 29 – Sept 2)
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across upper Thailand, effective from August 29 to September 2, 2026.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has released its first warning (No. 168/2569) regarding severe weather conditions expected between August 29 and September 2, 2026. The forecast indicates an increase in rainfall, with heavy to very heavy downpours anticipated in the upper northern and northeastern regions, as well as eastern areas and windward zones of the southwest monsoon.
This weather pattern is attributed to a monsoon trough shifting across the upper north and northeast, connecting to a low-pressure system near the coast of upper Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin. Simultaneously, the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is expected to strengthen.
For travelers and residents, this poses a risk of flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and regions near hillsides. The TMD advises caution when traveling through areas prone to recurring flooding. Furthermore, maritime conditions are expected to be rough; the upper Andaman Sea may see waves of 2–3 meters, potentially exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are expected to experience waves of approximately 2 meters. While the warning outlines the expected impact, specific localized rainfall totals and the exact duration of the most intense periods remain subject to further updates from meteorological authorities.
