Thailand’s EV Market Surges as Industry Leaders Urge Production Focus

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT) has highlighted a significant shift in the country's automotive landscape. During the 'NEW ENERGY FOR THAILAND' seminar held on August 26, 2026, EVAT President Suroj Sangsnit noted that the number of electric vehicles in Thailand has grown from fewer than 200 in 2015 to over 500,000 today.

While this rapid adoption reflects a major transition in consumer behavior, EVAT expressed concern that approximately 60% of these vehicles are currently imported. Industry leaders warn that if Thailand continues to function primarily as a consumer market for affordable imported vehicles rather than developing its own robust manufacturing base, the country risks missing its long-term industrial targets.

For residents and travelers, this growth means that charging infrastructure and EV-related services are likely to continue expanding across the country. However, the long-term stability of the automotive sector remains a point of discussion. It is yet to be confirmed how government policy will evolve to incentivize local production over continued reliance on imports. Observers are waiting to see if new industrial strategies will be implemented to ensure Thailand secures its position as a regional production hub rather than just a destination for imported electric cars.
