Farmers in Kalasin province are shifting toward professional rice seedling cultivation and mechanized transplanting to combat rising production costs and crop loss.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, farmers in Kalasin province are increasingly adopting modern agricultural practices to mitigate the impact of rising costs for fertilizer and labor. Faced with challenges such as weeds, weak crop growth, and unpredictable weather conditions like droughts and floods, many are moving away from traditional broadcasting methods.
Instead, a new business model has emerged: professional rice seedling cultivation and contract mechanized transplanting. By pre-growing seedlings in trays before using specialized machinery to plant them, farmers can significantly reduce seed loss and protect young plants from pests and diseases. This shift has proven highly profitable, with some operators reportedly earning at least 260,000 baht per season—a figure significantly higher than traditional rice farming.
For residents and those interested in Thailand’s agricultural landscape, this trend highlights a broader move toward innovation in the rural economy. While this shift offers a more stable income for local farmers, it remains to be seen how widely these mechanized techniques will be adopted across other provinces and whether this model will be sufficient to offset long-term climate-related risks to the rice industry.
