The Incident
Reports indicate that a perpetrator on a motorcycle has been targeting local shops. The individual typically approaches a store while remaining on their vehicle, claiming a leg injury prevents them from dismounting. They then purchase low-cost items, such as a single pack of cigarettes, using a high-denomination counterfeit bill. After receiving the change, the suspect flees the scene. This pattern has been repeated at multiple locations throughout the city center, causing significant financial losses for small business owners.
Impact and Precautions
In response to these incidents, many vendors at the Sap Sin Market and other areas have begun displaying signs informing customers that they will no longer accept large banknotes. These shops are encouraging patrons to use digital payment methods instead.
