Bangkok Governor Investigates Illegal Dumping in Phra Khanong Canal
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has launched an investigation into reports of construction debris being dumped into the Phra Khanong Canal, threatening drainage capacity.
On August 26, 2026, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt conducted an inspection of the Phra Khanong Canal following public reports of construction waste, specifically concrete debris, being dumped into the waterway. According to Khaosod Online, the Governor emphasized that such actions are unacceptable as they cause the canal to silt up, potentially hindering water drainage and increasing the risk of flooding in the area.
For residents and those living near the canal, this issue is significant as it directly impacts the city's flood management infrastructure. The Governor stated that construction materials must be disposed of at authorized facilities. Currently, two active projects are being scrutinized: the Phra Khanong Pumping Station improvement project and the Phra Khanong canal-side walkway construction.
While the Governor has vowed to hold those responsible fully accountable under the law, it remains to be confirmed which specific project or contractor is responsible for the dumping. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is currently conducting an investigation to identify the source of the debris. Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting such environmental violations to ensure that construction projects in the city adhere to environmental regulations.
