Thailand Extends Fishing Vessel Buyback Program Deadline

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Cabinet has officially approved an extension for the 'Fishing Vessel Removal Program' until September 30, 2026. This initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable marine resource management, was originally scheduled to conclude on March 2, 2026.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Captain Pattarasmi Thongsaluaykorn stated that the extension is intended to support seven specific fishing vessel owners who were unable to complete the required vessel dismantling or reclassification processes within the initial one-year timeframe. The program, which has an overall target of removing 923 vessels from the system, has already successfully processed compensation for 782 boats.

For residents and travelers, this policy adjustment reflects the government's ongoing efforts to regulate the fishing industry and manage marine resources. While the extension provides a necessary window for the remaining seven vessels to finalize their exit from the system and receive their compensation, it does not signal a broader change in maritime tourism or recreational boating regulations.
