Monk Arrested in Buriram for 20-Year-Old Rape Case
A 50-year-old monk was arrested in Surin province just one month before the statute of limitations on a 2006 rape charge was set to expire.
On August 25, 2026, police from Mueang Buriram Station apprehended a 50-year-old monk, identified as Somkiat, at a temple in Tha Tum district, Surin province. According to Khaosod Online, the arrest was executed based on a warrant issued by the Buriram Provincial Court regarding a rape case dating back to 2006.
Authorities report that the suspect, who was working as a security guard at a restaurant in Buriram at the time of the incident, allegedly raped a 19-year-old restaurant captain. Following the incident, the suspect fled the area and eventually entered the monkhood. The arrest occurred with only one month remaining before the statute of limitations for the crime would have expired.
Following his apprehension, the suspect was defrocked and taken to Mueang Buriram Police Station for further questioning. He has reportedly confessed to the allegations.
