Royal Patronage Granted for Late Disaster Relief Worker
King Maha Vajiralongkorn has granted royal patronage for the funeral of Supamongkol Rattanawijit, a disaster relief worker who passed away while assisting flood victims in Nan province.
On August 25, 2026, funeral rites were held at Wat Samakkhi in Nakhon Ratchasima province for Supamongkol Rattanawijit, a 47-year-old disaster relief chief for the Princess Pa Foundation of the Thai Red Cross. According to Khaosod Online, Mr. Supamongkol passed away in the early hours of August 24 at a hotel in Pua District, Nan province, while deployed to assist local flood victims. Medical reports indicated the cause of death was myocardial infarction due to coronary artery disease.
In recognition of his service, King Maha Vajiralongkorn has placed the funeral under royal patronage, providing royal bathing rites and wreaths. Nakhon Ratchasima Deputy Governor Ballang Waitsiri presided over the ceremony, which was attended by foundation representatives, officials, and fellow volunteers.
For residents and travelers, this event highlights the ongoing, high-stakes efforts of relief organizations operating in northern Thailand during the current flood season. While the immediate funeral arrangements are confirmed, the broader impact of this loss on the foundation’s local disaster response capacity remains to be seen. Travelers in flood-affected regions are advised to monitor local news for updates on relief operations and potential travel disruptions.
