Fake Police Officer Arrested for Extortion in Udon Thani
A volunteer police officer in Ban Dung district has surrendered to authorities following allegations of impersonating a police captain to extort money from local residents.
On August 25, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that a 43-year-old man, identified as Thanawat, surrendered to the Dong Yen Police Station in Udon Thani province. Known locally as 'Captain Ek,' the suspect was actually a volunteer police officer (Or Sor Tor) stationed at the Mee Chai guard post. He faces multiple serious charges after residents exposed his pattern of impersonating a police captain to conduct unauthorized checkpoints and home searches.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly coerced victims into paying between 10,000 and 30,000 THB to avoid legal prosecution for fabricated drug offenses. More than six victims have since filed formal complaints. One victim recounted that the suspect and his associates raided a farm hut, seized a muzzle-loading firearm, and demanded 20,000 THB, eventually settling for 10,000 THB despite finding no illegal drugs.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the importance of verifying the identity of individuals claiming to be law enforcement. While the suspect is now in custody, the investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather evidence from additional victims.
