High-Voltage Transformer Theft Reported in Khon Kaen
Authorities in Khon Kaen are investigating the theft of a high-voltage transformer, with officials suspecting the perpetrators possess specialized electrical expertise.
On August 24, 2026, officials from the Khon Kaen Rural Highway District inspected a site along the rural road 1004 in Nam Phong District, Khon Kaen, following reports of a stolen high-voltage transformer. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the 30 KVA, 22,000 V transformer, which powered local street lighting, was dismantled and stripped of its components.
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Adisak Chapuwong, a civil engineer with the highway department, noted that approximately 15 to 25 kilograms of copper wiring—essential for stepping down voltage from 22,000 V to 220 V—had been removed. The site, located near rice fields, showed signs of flattened grass, leading investigators to believe the theft was a well-planned operation. Officials suspect the culprits may be individuals with professional electrical training, possibly linked to previous similar incidents in the area.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights potential disruptions to street lighting in the Nam Phong area, which could impact nighttime visibility and road safety. While authorities are currently investigating the scene and gathering evidence, it remains to be confirmed whether this theft is connected to a specific criminal syndicate or if additional infrastructure in the region is at risk.
