Thailand Proposes New Data Center Oversight Committee
The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) is establishing a policy committee to regulate data center investments and manage resource consumption.
According to Khaosod Online, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has proposed that the Prime Minister appoint a chairperson for a new Data Center Policy Committee. This initiative follows the official gazette announcement of the committee’s formation last week. The primary objective is to establish comprehensive regulations for data center investments, specifically addressing the high demand these facilities place on national water and electricity supplies.
Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the NESDC, noted that Thailand has previously paused certain investment promotions to implement stricter conditions, including requirements for electricity security deposits. The new committee aims to ensure that future investments are efficient and do not negatively impact local utility availability. This is particularly relevant as data centers can currently seek permits through various channels, such as the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), rather than relying solely on the Board of Investment (BOI).
For residents and travelers, this development signals a shift toward more centralized management of digital infrastructure. While this may not immediately affect daily life, it reflects the government's effort to balance technological growth with the stability of essential public utilities. It remains to be confirmed how the committee will specifically define its regulatory criteria and how these new rules will interact with existing permits issued by other government agencies.
