Election Commission Clarifies Status of Former Subcommittee Member

On August 24, 2026, the Office of the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) issued a statement responding to public concerns raised by former EC member Somchai Srisutthiyakorn. The controversy centered on the appointment of Nattawut Wongniam to the 12th Subcommittee for Adjudication of Problems or Disputes.

According to the EC, reports suggesting that Nattawut held a significant role in handling case files are inaccurate. The commission explained that after his appointment, they requested assistance from the Office of the Attorney General. However, on April 19, 2019, the Attorney General’s office informed the EC that Nattawut had already been dismissed from his position as a public prosecutor. Consequently, the EC replaced him with another individual. The commission emphasized that Nattawut served on the subcommittee for only 57 days and was never invited to attend meetings or review any case files during that period.
