Thailand Moves to Nominate Phra Nakhon Khiri for UNESCO World Heritage Status
Deputy Minister Sabida Thaiseth has directed the Fine Arts Department to expedite data collection to support the nomination of Phetchaburi’s 'Khao Wang' as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
According to a report by Matichon Online on August 24, 2026, Deputy Minister of Interior Sabida Thaiseth is actively pushing for the inclusion of Phra Nakhon Khiri, locally known as 'Khao Wang,' on the UNESCO World Heritage list. To facilitate this goal, the Deputy Minister has formally requested that the Fine Arts Department accelerate the process of gathering and organizing the necessary historical and cultural documentation.
For residents and travelers, this initiative highlights the potential for increased international recognition and conservation efforts for the historic hilltop palace in Phetchaburi. If successful, the designation could lead to enhanced tourism infrastructure and stricter preservation protocols for the site, which is already a significant cultural landmark in the province.
