Medical Experts Identify Common Causes of Morning Headaches
Doctors in Thailand have outlined nine frequent causes for waking up with a headache, ranging from sleep posture to underlying health conditions.
According to a report by Khaosod Online published on August 23, 2026, medical professionals have identified that morning headaches are often caused by factors beyond simple stress. Experts highlight that these headaches are frequently linked to sleep disorders, specific headache types, or underlying health issues.
One of the most common triggers identified is neck pain, often resulting from sleeping in an improper position. Other frequent causes include sleep apnea, which typically presents as a heavy sensation on both sides of the head that gradually subsides. Additional factors include irregular sleep patterns, migraines, teeth grinding (bruxism), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and the excessive consumption of painkillers, caffeine, or alcohol.
Furthermore, doctors noted that conditions such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension, depression, anxiety, cluster headaches, and rare 'hypnic' headaches can also be responsible. While less common, medical experts warn that morning headaches can occasionally signal serious neurological conditions, such as brain tumors or vascular abnormalities, particularly if the pain intensity increases over time or is accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
For residents and travelers, understanding these potential triggers is important for managing daily well-being. However, it remains to be confirmed through professional medical consultation whether a specific morning headache is related to minor lifestyle habits or requires further diagnostic investigation for more serious underlying health concerns.
