Taiwanese Tourist’s Search for Missing Cat Ends in Tragedy in Chiang Mai

A Taiwanese tourist visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand, has faced a distressing ordeal following the disappearance of her pet cat, 'Tao Tao.' The cat, a grey Thai breed, went missing on August 17, 2026, in the Fa Ham sub-district of Mueang Chiang Mai. The owner had launched an extensive search, offering a reward of 30,000 baht, which was set to increase to 50,000 baht if the cat was found by the following Sunday.

According to Khaosod Online, the situation took a turn for the worse when the owner was informed by a neighbor that Tao Tao had been killed by a dog on August 19. Beyond the loss of her pet, the tourist reported being targeted by scammers who falsely claimed the cat was still alive in an attempt to extort money for 'tracking services.'

This incident serves as a reminder for travelers and residents in Chiang Mai to remain vigilant against opportunistic scams during times of personal distress. While the search for the pet has concluded, the incident highlights the risks of online solicitation during missing pet cases.
